Graham Burgess provides a local pest control service, including Bees, Wasps, Mice, Rabbits, Mink, Moles, Rats, Earwigs and Birds. This month he has written a feature on Flies and Fly traps.
A fly infestation in your home is a nuisance and a health risk. Flies can carry diseases such as Typhoid, E Coli, and Salmonella.
To make a simple fly trap take a 2 litre lemonade bottle, carefully cut off the top third of the bottle. Pour in a sweet liquid, like sugar water in bottom part leaving a good air gap. Push in the cut off top third upside down, making a cone shape. Flies will be able to find their way in but not get out.
BioDri super absorbent powder – This helps stop smells and bacteria and therefore prevents flies from becoming more prevalent. BioDri is a super absorbent powder to extend the life of bedding. Four things to do when you get flies are:
- Exclusion – Prevent flies entering your house by proofing of doors, windows and vents.
- Restriction – Good general housekeeping to remove possible breeding sites.
- Destruction – Correct fly control for your needs.
- Monitoring – Regular inspections to make sure they don’t come back.
