Graham Burgess provides a local pest control service, including Bees, Wasps, Mice, Rabbits, Mink, Moles, Rats, Earwigs and Birds. This month he has written a feature on Wasp traps.
Wasps are starting to build up in numbers so bee keepers should start taking precautions to prevent them from robbing their hives.
To make a simple wasp trap all you need is a jam jar with a metal lid.
First, make a hole in the lid with a screw driver. It only needs to be about 9mm (3/8 of an inch) hole.
Then put a couple of spoonfuls of jam into the jar and half fill the jar with water. Do not over fill with water or the wasps will be able to get out .
Tie some string around the top of the jar and hang it up near your hive. Do not put it on top of the hive or it will defeat the object by attaching the wasps to the hive and they will take the easier option and rob the hive.
